Dominican Republic wins gold medal in dramatic fashion

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, September 27, 2009 – Dominican Republic saved four match-points in the fourth set and went on to defeat hosts Puerto Rico 19-25, 25-23, 16-25, 32-30, 15-8 in the final match of the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship played in front of more than 7,000  enthusiastic spectators.

The victory earned the Dominicans the ticket to the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup next November in Japan.

Prisilla Rivera and Bethania de la Cruz each recorded 22 points for the winners and Lisvel Eve added 11. Puerto Rican Aurea Cruz topped all the players with 32 points and Sarai Alvarez tallied 17.

“Our team is super happy with the goal we have been trying to achieve for many years,” said Milagros Cabral, captain of Dominican Republic. “We have never been in the Grand Champions Cup and we got the ticket because we battle for it. We tried to keep the calm in the fourth set because we were not willing to give away the game.”

“It was not our best match of the tournament,” said Marcos Kwiek. “Our reception was not good and our attack was not as good as in the previous matches. In the key moments we improved our serves and put a lot of pressure on the rival.”
